PhD position in alpine and arctic plant ecology100% / starting date is January/February 2026The research group Ecology at the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Basel in Switzerland invites applications for a fully funded four-year PhD position in alpine and arctic plant ecology. Current environmental changes are causing major changes in the physical environment, which may in turn fundamentally alter the functioning of ecosystems. Alpine and arctic ecosystems have remained relatively natural so far, but are especially affected by these changes as they are warming faster than the global average. Most plant species in these regions are therefore shifting their distributions to track the climatic conditions they are adapted to. However, there is considerable variation in the responses of individual species. While some species are benefitting from the environmental changes, others are decreasing in abundance and range size, potentially resulting in biotic homogenization and a loss of biodiversity in the long term. This is especially critical because alpine and arctic ecosystems harbour disproportionately high levels of biodiversity and provide important ecosystem services to humans.Your positionThe successful candidate will focus their research on analysing temporal trends of the rarity of plant species and the biotic homogenization of plant communities in alpine and arctic ecosystems. They will combine their own field observations in the European Alps and the Arctic with a novel microclimatic dataset and a large Europe-wide database comprising re-surveys of historical vegetation data since the middle of the 19th century. The PhD candidate will have the opportunity to develop their own research questions within this broad theme. Finally, the candidate will also contribute to teaching and other research activities of the research group Ecology and is expected to collaborate closely with other research group members and researchers from other institutions.Your profileWe are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a self-organized and solution-oriented work attitude. PhD Position in Single-Molecule Biophysics using Fluorescence & DyeCycling/FRETLevel of employment / date of entry100% / starting Nov 2025 to January 2026 (negotiable)The Schmid group at the University of Basel invites applications of talented and ambitious candidates for a PhD student position in the field of single-molecule biophysics, for advancing our fluorescence-based DyeCycling/FRET technology to study biomolecular dynamics.Your positionBiomolecular dynamics, such as conformational changes, are the understudied link between biomolecular structure and function. Single-molecule FRET is an established technique, unique in its capacity to resolve nanometer small conformational changes within single biomolecules (proteins, DNA, RNA), without suffering from ensemble averaging. Its Achilles heel is, however, photo-bleaching of the fluorescent dyes involved, which ends the experiment prematurely, rendering many biological questions inaccessible. To bypass this limitation, our group has developed DyeCycling/FRET, where the dyes are continuously replaced. Project descriptionThe biodiversity crisis is in part driven by invasive species, yet many non-natives are only recognized as invasive once they are widespread. A key challenge is thus to identify which non-native species may spread into natural ecosystems before their eradication becomes unfeasible. Mountain ecosystems remained comparatively natural so far and are thought to be minimally affected, but non-native plants are spreading upslope along roads and trails. However, it remains unknown whether non-native plant species already occur in undisturbed habitats, which species have the potential to spread, which drivers besides roads and trails are decisive, and which species should be classified as invasive. GloNoMo will address these gaps by combining field observations, experiments, and macroecological analyses using so far untapped global monitoring data across all populated continents.Your positionThe successful candidate will focus on macroecological analyses of non-native plant species in mountain ecosystems based on a novel global dataset. At the heart of this network is Hsp90, a molecular chaperone essential for the folding and maturation of at least 20% of all cellular proteins. Hsp90's malfunction is implicated in cancer, neurodegenerative, and metabolic diseases. Lucchi at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Basel are inviting applications for a PhD position focused on the foundations and applications of reasoning in with large language models (LLMs). The successful candidate will investigate both theoretical aspects – such as understanding the mechanisms and limitations of reasoning in modern LLMs – and practical applications, including solving mathematical reasoning problems and tackling the Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus (ARC) challenge among others. The ideal candidate has a strong background in machine learning and an interest in bridging rigorous theoretical insights with challenging real-world tasks. They will also explore reinforcement learning strategies to optimize decision-making policies in complex environments, and develop fine-tuning protocols for large pre-trained models to adapt them to specialized reasoning domains as well as to address a generalization gap in LLM reasoning and their adaptation across reasoning domains.
