Scientist position on: Acoustic Virtual Reality for environmental noise

Research AreaThis new position is embedded in the interdisciplinary research project RESTORE on the restorative potential of urban green spaces in noise-polluted environments and is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. In this position, you will develop virtual reality components to bring urban sceneries into our acoustic laboratory facility to conduct psychophysical experiments on noise, stress and restoration. The diversified work comprises lab and field work and includesAcquisition and implementation of multichannel audio and video recording systemsApplied research on audio signal processing, involving algorithm design, implementation, and experimental validation (higher-order Ambisonics)Performing measurements and recordings in different outdoor locationsIntegration in Empa's existing laboratory facility AuraLab with a 3D loudspeaker setup and head-mounted displaySoftware development for synchronized playback of audio and video channels, and user interaction in the laboratory (programming of game engine)Active participation in project, group and lab meetings, knowledge transfer, presentations and scientific publications
Your Qualifications You have a Master’s or PhD degree (or equivalent) in Acoustics or Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science. Experience with scientific computing in Matlab, Python, or C is required. A strong interest in sound, audio signal processing and experiments is expected. Additionally, very good command of English and German are a plus.
We offer an exciting position in a top ranked research institution and research infrastructure environment. The starting date is in autumn 2020. The duration of the appointment is two years.
