PhD student on development of an innovative system for strengthening of existing road bridges

in the framework of an Innosuisse industry project. Your tasksDevelopment of an innovative system for strengthening of existing road bridges based on combination of memory-steel reinforcement and ultra-high-performance fibre reinforced concrete (UHPFRC)Detailed FE modelling of the new innovative strengthening systemPlanning of appropriate middle- and large-scale experimental set-ups for mechanical characterization of the proposed strengthening systemPerformance of experiments in the construction laboratory at Empa and evaluation of results, application of innovative measuring systems like digital image correlation (DIC) measurements and optical fibresDevelopment of accompanying analytical models for mechanical behaviour of the proposed strengthening systemApplication and evaluation of the strengthening system on a real bridge structure within a pilot projectIndependent processing of the research including communication with laboratory personal, supervisors and project partnersProject documentation (internal) and scientific publication (external)Supervision of students in the context of bachelor and master theses will be possible
Your profile
  • Engineering university degree (Master) in civil engineering with specialization in structural engineering
  • Strong modelling skills (analytical and FE)
  • Strong experimental skills, i.e. ability to develop optimal experimental set-ups as well as to organize and successfully perform experiments in the laboratory
  • Team worker, able to collaborate with lab personal as well as with industry partners on the daily basis
  • Experience in the engineering practice (design and / or execution of engineering structures, preferably bridges) is of advantage
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English are mandatory, good German language skills are desirable

This PhD thesis will be enrolled at the ETH Zurich and co-supervised by Empa and OST. The main working place will be at Empa in Dübendorf, whereas a further working place will be at OST in Rapperswil. The position is available from 1 March 2022.
